New Lastikman

Mark Bautista is the new Lastikman.

Mark who?

Mark Bautista says he doesn't believe that he's gonna play Lastikman. Komiks (Pinoy comics) fans won't just say that this is unbelievable. They will say that it's absurd!

Why would you pay millions of pesos to buy rights of a komiks franchise? So you can launch the movie career of a singer? Viva Films says the answer is yes. He's not even an actor for crying out load. He's a singer. I don't think he can even act.

But the catch is this. Yes they make him play for the lead role. But this is mostly because Mark is the love team of the Pop Princess Sarah Geronimo. They want to make these singers household names. And we komiks fans are the one to suffer. It's a corporate formula. And the material is trashed.

Also, it is directed by Mac Alejandre who also directed the Captain Barbell remake. When i saw it in the screens, i really thought it sucked. In fairness to the director, maybe i should give it a second look. But you can ask much from the director of a local teen soap opera program. (But I was totally wrong about a director who also directed teen soaps: Jeffrey Jeturian who directed Bridal Shower was superb, and yes, if i'm not mistaken, also has directing credits for the SexBomb Girls' Daisy Siete. Hehe.)

But what komiks fans were ranting about was the new costume. They changed the costume to green so that it will be different to the original version and Vic Sotto's Lastikman. Was the change necessary? Maybe yes since the previous movie version was only two years ago, it will have a new feel to it. But still, it will deviate from the original version just because the producers say so.

Okay. The last question is: Will I watch it? I stomached Captain Barbell last year. Maybe my tummy can do some more hurling just to see how our beloved komiks characters will turn out.

I don't know anything 'bout that, but you've got to go out and see The Incredibles once it hits wide release. I actually wouldn't call it a superhero movie, I got more of this secret agent vibe off it, but goddamn does PIXAR know how to portray metahuman using their abilities. From panels to the wide screen man, it's a flawless translation.
